WHAT IS THE MIDDLE COLLEGE?
-
A "COLLEGE RECOVERY" program which includes GED PREPARATION and college level PREPARATION FOR EMPLOYMENT course work to help students pursue their goal of A COLLEGE EDUCATION.

A FREE PROGRAM for individuals, BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 - 24, who have not completed their high school education.

WHERE IS THE MIDDLE COLLEGE LOCATED?
-
Room 663 at the DOWNTOWN CAMPUS of J. SARGEANT REYNOLDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

The downtown campus is located at 700 East Jackson Street, between 7th Street and 8th Street, two blocks east of the Richmond Coliseum.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE MIDDLE COLLEGE?
-
Individuals BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 - 24 who have not completed high school and are not currently enrolled in high school.

Individuals who demonstrate a COMBINED 9TH GRADE AVERAGE based on READING AND MATH testing results.

Individuals who are ready to COMMIT TO THEIR FUTURE through participation in a structured ACADEMIC and PRE - VOCATIONAL program.

WHEN WILL THE NEXT MIDDLE COLLEGE PROGRAM BEGIN?
-
The Fall 2007 program will begin on August 20, 2007, contact us for space availability. Applications are NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR THE SPRING 2008 Middle College program. This program is SCHEDULED TO BEGIN ON JANUARY 7, 2008.

Each semester program is LIMITED TO 40 STUDENTS; those applicants who do not qualify for this semester will be referred to a community-based GED program.

HOW OFTEN DO CLASSES MEET?
-
Classes meet FOUR DAYS A WEEK; each class period is a minimum of 2 hours.

DAY or EVENING classes are available to accommodate individuals who are employed.

Additional time may be required outside of the scheduled class time for tutoring, program activities, and Middle College special events. Attendance is mandatory for all scheduled classes and events.

WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THE MIDDLE COLLEGE PROGRAM?

The Middle College program is a ONE SEMESTER program (approximately 4 months).
-
While preparing for the GED, students will also receive assistance with enrolling in college, applying for financial aid, identifying an academic/vocational plan, and registering for classes. One year of follow-up services will be provided for all program participants.

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS?

Submit a Middle College application.
-
Once an application has been received, applicants will be contacted to schedule a
TABE testing date and time.
Testing sessions will include:
A Middle College program overview.
Completion of the Reading and Math portions of the TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) test.
Completion of a writing sample in the form of a short essay.
All applicants who have completed testing will be contacted.
Applicants who have met the minimum 9th grade requirement will be contacted for an interview to review their results and further discuss their qualifications for the program.
Applicants who have not met the 9th grade minimum requirement will be provided referral paperwork and contact information about local community adult education programs.
