During the
2007-2008 academic year a number of students, faculty and
staff developed seven (7) projects that the institution reviewed
to possibly adopt as the institution’s Quality Enhancement
Plan (QEP). A brief description of each proposal is listed
below.
Projects include:
1. Project
DOERS (Developing Opportunities for Educational Retention & Success)
2. Faculty
Success
3. E-Advising
4. Advising
Access: Enhancing Student Learning Through Effective Use of
Advising Protocols

1.
Project DOERS (Developing Opportunities for Educational Retention & Success)
Project DOERS will
enhance learning and support of students who receive two or
more developmental placement recommendations. The project will
include a system of structured student support including orientation,
advising, peer mentoring, tutoring, integrated instruction
and appropriate faculty development. The outcomes will be timely
course progression, increased enrollment of students needing
developmental courses, increased retention and graduation rates,
and enhanced skills for continuous and self-directed lifelong
learning.

Faculty Success [Back
to top]
This project is a training program for adjunct faculty
that would consist of graduated training levels, using courses
based on best practices discovered through research. Courses
will involve training in pedagogy (teaching and learning),
technology, and Blackboard. The outcomes will be increased
student success within courses taught by adjuncts, and other
faculty.

E-Advising [Back
to top]
To better serve JSRCC students
and their advising needs, this project proposes the use of
an electronic web-based advising system that would consist
of three parts: (1) E-advising website; (2) E-mail advising
system; and (3) expanded MsJSRCC portal that would include
an interactive degree audit function. The outcomes will include
students learning how to: appropriately select classes and
programs of study, identify pre- and co-requisites, and explain
their choices of electives. In addition student success and
retention should improve.

Advising Access: Enhancing Student Learning Through Effective
Use of Advising Protocols [Back
to top]
This project focuses on determining the most appropriate,
effective and most accessible modes of delivering academic
advising which best meet the academic needs and goals of
JSRCC students. The project calls for two phases, with phase
one being the design and implementation of an inclusive and
cohesive infrastructure within JSRCC to manage and deliver
efficient and effective student advising. Phase two involves
the design and implementation of a cross-disciplinary study
of student success and progression through the use of various
advising protocols. This project will result in students
being able to comprehend effective methods to access, utilize
and apply academic advising protocols to achieve academic
success and the accomplishment of their individual goals.

Comprehensive Career Advising [Back
to top]
Using a three-part approach,
this project is aimed at enhancing the career services available
at JSRCC. The three-parts include: (1) creation of career
exploration opportunities in the academic curriculum; (2)
enhancement of the college’s current career advising
services; and (3) marketing of academic programs and their
career paths. The outcomes of this project include students
being able to: clearly identify career paths available to
them, understand the connection between academic coursework
and potential career, and gain academic and career knowledge
necessary to successfully transfer.

Faculty Curriculum for Teaching Distance Learning [Back
to top]
This project is designed
to implement training to improve faculty skill level in order
to provide exceptional quality distance learning instruction.
This program would consist of graduated training levels, using
courses based on best practices through research. Courses will
involve training in pedagogy (teaching and learning), technology
and in-depth uses of Blackboard. The outcome will be a richer,
more productive learning environment through distance learning.

Engaging Classroom Practices [Back
to top]
This project is designed
to train faculty members who will serve as facilitators within
their disciplines for sharing methods to increase student engagement
within the classroom. Trained faculty will work informally
via professional development opportunities (PDOs) and group
sessions with faculty in the same discipline. The outcomes
include increased time on pedagogical (teaching and learning)
tasks by faculty, increased success by students in subsequent
courses and increase transfer success and persistence of students.
