award

Program Director Kristi Green recently received the 2008 Dennis Tilley
Educator of the Year
Award from the National Federation of Opticianry Schools. The NFOS is
a national organization dedicated to the promotion of formal opticianry
education. Its member schools are located throughout the United States
and Canada.

Renowned spoken word artist to perform at Reynolds RICHMOND,
Va. (October 7, 2008) – Taalam Acey,
a distinguished spoken word artist, will perform at the J. Sargeant Reynolds
Community College Massey Library Technology Center’s Lipman Auditorium
on October 16 at 6 p.m. This is a free event that is open to the public.
Acey has been a full time traveling poet since 1999. He has published
a novel, a comprehensive collection of poems, an award winning memoir
and 10 spoken word CDs. His work has been featured on BET, TV One and
in Essence Magazine. He is an accomplished slam poet and has won slams

New Library Technology Center opens on Parham Road Campus
RICHMOND, Va. (August 25, 2008) – J.
Sargeant Reynolds Community College started the fall semester with 12 percent
more students than this time last year, making the Fall 2008 student body the
largest in the college’s 36 year history. More than 10,000 students are
enrolled in classes this semester, many taking advantage of new guaranteed
transfer programs, dual enrollment opportunities, distance education courses,
and Fuel $mart Fridays scheduling.

Sargeant Reynolds Community College Executive Vice President Dr. Genene
LeRosen was recently appointed to the Virginia Network of the American
Council on Education (ACE), Office of Women in Higher Education (OWHE).
As an executive board member, she will coordinate state activities related

The Henrico County Board of Supervisors recently appointed
J. Douglas Freeman, Sr. to his third term on the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community
College Board. He served previously for eight years on the College
Board before his term limit was reached in 2005. Freeman has served for
the past three years on the College’s Foundation Board.

Friday‐only classes estimated to save students more than $1,000
in gas and vehicle costs next semester RICHMOND, VA (July 22, 2008) ‐ While
many colleges across the country are scheduling classes four days per week
to help students cope with the rising fuel cots, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community

to drive to campus only one day a week and still earn a full load of credits

J. Sargeant Reynolds’ Goochland Campus to host Spring Garden Fest
RICHMOND, Va. (April 16, 2008) – J.
Sargeant Reynolds Community College will host the Fourth Annual Spring
Garden Fest, in conjunction with the Goochland Powhatan Master Gardeners
Association and the Virginia Cooperative Extension, on April 26 from 8:30
am to 3:30 pm at JSRCC’s Goochland Campus. The festival will feature
classes, workshops, demonstrations and plant sales.
Topics will feature home gardening, lawn care, landscape design, native
trees, difficult topography, plant diseases, propagation and organic
growing. Classes count as continuing education credits for Master Gardeners,
however anyone with a general interest is encouraged to attend. Registration
is $10 in advance or $12 at the door, plus the cost of materials if applicable.

gifts campaign to provide financial resources to address the community’s

has changed his life. Donned his royal blue cap and gown, Smith recently joined
20 of his peers in a ceremony recognizing the completion of the GED and the

be homeless. "My mother had a severe drug problem. I think I was like
five or six years old the first time that we were homeless. And I had been

Reynolds’ Opticianry Students Team up with VA Hospital Center to
Make Eyeglasses for Honduras Mission
First year Opticianry students attending J. Sargeant Reynolds Community
College this semester will fabricate over 500 pair of eyeglasses for
Honduras residents. The Virginia Hospital Center will deliver the eyeglasses
during its annual medical missionary trip in November of 2007. “This
is an amazing real-life opportunity for our first year students, as they
will be making eyewear for real patients. Most students don’t start
making patient eyewear until their second year in the opticianry degree
program,” said Opticianry Program Director Kristi Ostrom.

JSRCC hosts nursing completion ceremony Nearly
100 nursing graduates participated in the biannual Nursing Recognition
Ceremony on Thursday, January 25, 2007. The program recognizes students
recently completing the Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing.
The ceremony opened with a welcome by JSRCC President Gary Rhodes, followed
by an inspirational keynote address from retired JSRCC Professor Jean Moseley,
RN, MS.

Reynolds Medical Lab Program Receives
$100,000 Equipment Grant From Abbott Diagnostics The
J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Medical Laboratory Technology program
has been chosen as one of only 16 programs in the country to receive an
AxSYM analyzer through the Labs Are Vital ™ program sponsored by
Abbott Diagnostics. Valued in excess of $100,000, the machine measures
various chemicals and the differential qualities of blood and other biological
samples in the diagnosis of disease.

the Iraq War and it’s consequences in the Middle East. Dan Senor, former
chief spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq and senior advisor to
presidential envoy L. Paul Bremer III, the administrator of the Coalition Provisional

Reynolds Foundation donates $1M to remove
financial barriers for JSRCC students
As students headed back to campus at J. Sargeant Reynolds
Community College this fall the college celebrated a historic event by receiving
one of its largest gifts ever donated by a private family foundation. The JSRCC

S. Reynolds Foundation has been made to increase much needed scholarship funds
