Richmond names new school leader

The Richmond Public School Board has appointed a veteran education administrator as its new superintendent.
Dr. Yvonne Brandon was elected by a unanimous vote today to take the helm of the city's 24,000 pupil school district. Brandon was selected after a rigorous and competitive recruitment process yielded 20 highly qualified candidates from around the nation.

Anthony Gill says he was drawn to do something in the health care profession from an early age.
“I was 11, but still have vivid memories of my grandmother and her struggle with brain cancer,” he says. “Her experience and the exposure to the medical world made me realize I wanted to be involved in some capacity.”

Friday-only classes
We’ve reported on schools that have experimented with four day work weeks. Many of them did so to show appreciation for their staff, and in some cases to reduce commuting and benefit the environment. Those schools found themselves able to maintain student services at customary levels—and in many instances, student services improved as a result of extended office hours.

Richmond mayor to look at use of surplus real estate
Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones said he wants to make the best use of the city's considerable land holdings.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently awarded the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech an almost $500,000 four-year grant to expand its Lab-in-a-Box program for electrical and computer engineering classes to reach online students, while helping Blacksburg students with after-hours questions.

Warner hears concerns during Richmond visit

Barely a week on the job, Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., is escaping Washington for Richmond, trying to do more listening than talking on the sour economy. In what aides dubbed his first field trip since taking office Jan. 6, Warner met for more than 90 minutes yesterday with about 30 college students and small-business owners at the downtown campus of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

Challenging Session Ahead in Va. General Assembly
Budget-balancing — job number one of the 2009 General Assembly — could require something old (spending cuts), something new (higher taxes), something borrowed (debt-backed bonds) and something blue (Democrats).
The legislature returns Wednesday for a 46-day, election-year session, the overarching theme of which is the deepening recession that has blown another hole — this time, at least $3.2 billion — in the two-year, $77 billion budget.

Senator Mark Warner discusses economy with Reynolds students
Senator Mark Warner joined Richmond City Mayor Dwight Jones recently at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College to talk with college students and small business owners about the state of the economy. He discussed and took questions on topics including access to student loans, frozen credit markets, taxes and healthcare. His intention, he said, was to do more listening than talking and encouraged attendees to share their stories with him.

JSRCC Educational Foundation Board President Elaine Jordan
was recently recognized by Virginia Business magazine as one of the state’s top construction lawyers. Jordan has served on the Foundation Board for eight years and has provided outstanding leadership of the College’s $15 million Campaign for Reynolds. Working in collaboration with the Virginia Bar Association, Virginia Business has published a list of top lawyers in a variety of legal disciplines since 2000. This year, the pool of potential voters expanded from 7,000 lawyers to all 38,000 licensed lawyers in the state.
