REYNOLDS TO HOST SEMINAR ON THE IRAQ WAR
AND IT'S CONSEQUENCES IN THE MIDDLE EAST

RICHMOND, Va (October 6, 2006) - On Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. in the North Run Auditorium, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College will present a satellite seminar on the Iraq War and it’s consequences in the Middle East. Dan Senor, former chief spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq and senior advisor to presidential envoy L. Paul Bremer III, the administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority, will lead the discussion. Participants will examine America's strategy of pre-emption and democracy-building and consider if the strategy has been a force for security or destabilization in the Arab-Muslim world.

As one of the longest-serving American civilians in the Middle East, Senor spent substantial time in Iraq, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Jordan. During his 15-month tour of duty, he worked closely with the military and advised Ambassador Bremer and the Bush Administration on various issues related to U.S. strategy, policy, and communication in Iraq. He worked closely with the U.S. national security team, including Secretaries of State Rice and Rumsfeld and Generals Abizaid and Sanchez, as well as other senior foreign policy officials. He also acted as the civilian face of the Coalition Authority, interfacing with Americans, Europeans, Iraqis, and the world.

Senor's expertise on international policy issues concerning Iraq, Iran, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and the tension between Russia and the Ukraine, make him uniquely qualified to speak about America's position in the international community. The discussion will examine the limits and the potential for America's new approach to influence the Middle East, and address the root causes of terrorism. Senor will present several case studies: Iraq, Iran, Israel/Palestine, and Lebanon/Syria. He will also refer to events in North Korea over the past 15 years and will consider how the North Korean approach and model might be applied to the Middle East.

Serving over 17,000 students annually, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is the youngest and third largest of 23 community colleges in Virginia. The College operates three campuses serving residents in the City of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover, Goochland, Powhatan and Louisa. For more information visit www.reynolds.edu.
