American Sign Language

Career Studies Certificate

 

Purpose: The program prepares individuals to communicate proficiently in American Sign Language. The focus is on American Sign Language vocabulary, syntax, non-manual signals, and receptive skills. 

Admission Requirements: General college curricular admission

Program Notes: Students must begin with SCM 100 – Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) I. Students who have previous sign language experience, either for credit, professional or personal, and desire to begin the curriculum beyond SCM 100 (the first semester ASL course) are required to complete the ASL Placement Test administered by the program head prior to registering for courses. Students must attain a grade of “C” or better in each core curricular (SCM) course before enrolling in more advanced SCM courses.

1 The American Sign Language Supervised Study is a 1-credit course that is generally taken concurrently with SCM 100 and SCM 101.

2 Approved electives include SCM 115 – Expressive and Receptive Fingerspelling (2 credits), SCM 198 – American Sign Language Through Music (3 credits), SCM 198 – Sign Tuning (3 credits), SCM 199 – Supervised Study in American Sign Language (enrollment beyond the 2 credits in SCM 199 that are required for graduation may count towards the SCM elective).

3 Selection of a course to fulfill the general education elective requirement must be approved by the division administering this program.
