Specializations:
eCommerce
Marketing Management
Retail Merchandising
Purpose:
The present marketing venues and opportunities
resulting from the strong presence of the internet, the proliferation of
small entrepreneurial business startups, market diversity, and the growing
need for middle management staff by mass merchandisers, require more focused
instructional experiences than traditional marketing programs. The Marketing
AAS degree addresses the current needs of the community, workplace, and
students with three specializations: Marketing Management,
eCommerce, and
Retail Merchandising.
The specializations share core courses that provide students with general
education and basic marketing competencies as well as courses that allow
students to develop skills in their specialized areas of interest.
The Marketing Management specialization includes retailing, supervision,
leadership, customer service, computer technology, and research and evaluation
strategies. The eCommerce specialization is designed for students
whose interests and professional pursuits are dedicated to electronic marketing
or sales. The Retail Merchandising specialization combines the elements
of technology, leadership, and financial analysis. This specialization also
provides an excellent opportunity for those students pursuing small business
ownership, manufacturing, or wholesale professional goals.

Program Notes: Students interested in the Marketing
AAS degree program should possess proficiency in high school English and
a strong background in basic arithmetic as evidenced by passing scores on
the college's placement tests in reading, writing, and mathematics or completion
of required developmental studies courses.
Students will be required to repeat MKT courses in which a final grade of
lower than "C" is earned. It is strongly recommended that students complete
SDV 100, College Success Skills,
by the end of the first semester of study at the college.
The purpose of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree curriculum
is to prepare students for immediate employment upon graduation. Four-year
college and university transfer opportunities for Associate of Applied Science
degrees, if existing, are usually very specific in nature. Students may,
however, substitute some courses in the AAS degree curriculum with courses
that generally transfer to senior institutions. Students considering transfer
to a four-year institution should consult their faculty advisor at the earliest
possible date for further guidance and are advised to get assurances in
writing in advance from the institution to which they wish to transfer.
Financial Requirements:
For
Market Week (MKT 239), students who choose to travel will incur expenses
for transportation,
lodging, and meals to attend the apparel markets in cities such as
Dallas, Atlanta, New York and Las Vegas. The estimated cost is
$500-800 per semester. Prices vary depending on mode of transportation
and lodging arrangements
Coordinated Internships:
All students in the Marketing AAS degree
program are required to complete a Coordinated Internship (MKT
290) that provides on-the-job training in Campus Casuals, the College's
on-campus retail training laboratory. This internship provides the student
with practical exposure to many facets of retailing, including buying, sales,
management, inventory control, and supervision. Students in the Retail Merchandising
specialization must complete a second Coordinated Internship (MKT
290), the Retail Opportunity Initiative (ROI), which combines a semester
of work experience in the retail field with the techniques and theory learned
in the classroom. The ROI experience was added to the Retail Merchandising
specialization through the support of the Richmond Retail Merchants Association.
Computer Competency Requirement:
Students in this program will meet the college's computer competency
requirement by successfully completing
ITE 115.
Students can also meet this requirement by passing the college's computer
competency exam, administered in the testing centers on each campus, in
which case they receive college credit for
ITE 115.
Students not passing the computer competency exam may retake the exam only
once.
