Carpentry Apprenticeship

Certificate

Purpose: This program, which is based on the Wheels of Learning competencies (Levels 1,2, 3 and 4), is designed to provide the related instruction component for carpentry apprentices. The Carpentry Apprenticeship program is approved by the Virginia Apprenticeship Council and accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

Admission Requirements: General college curricular admission

Program Notes: Upon completion of this program, students will receive a Certificate in Carpentry from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and a Journeyman Carpenter Certificate from NCCER. Enrollment in this program is open to any person who meets the college’s general curricular admission requirements. However, to become a carpenter apprentice, participants must also be continuously employed by a qualified contractor capable of providing 8000 hours of related field training, according to the Standards of Apprenticeship, and must maintain satisfactory progress in the field and in the classroom. Interested persons should contact the Richmond Chapter, Associated General Contractors of Virginia, Inc. The classroom instruction is designed so that students will progress through the BLD courses in a sequence consisting of two 8-week courses each semester (fall and spring) for a total of six semesters. Secondary school students who successfully complete Level 1 competencies in the technical centers in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield may receive articulated credit at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and, as a result, be placed in Level 2 courses when enrolling in the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Carpentry Apprenticeship program.

Computer Competency Requirement: Students in this program will meet the college’s computer competency requirement by successfully completing IST 100. Students can also meet this requirement by passing the college’s computer competency exam, administered in the testing centers on each campus, in which case they will receive college credit for IST 100. Students not passing the computer competency exam may retake the exam only once.
