Getting Started at Reynolds

Admission to J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is open to anyone with a High School diploma, a GED, a certificate of completion of home schooling, or who is 18 and has passed the Ability to Benefit test. You may select either a curricular (if you plan to earn a degree or certificate) or non-curricular program.

Admission Overview

New students and students returning from an absence of at least three years must complete an Application for Admission. High school graduation transcripts or GED Exam results are required of applicants who are completing secondary studies. Applicants to any of the health technology programs must submit official high school transcripts that document graduation or a GED diploma. For reinstatement from suspension or dismissal refer to the section on Academic Policies and Procedures and Academic Standing.

Curricular applicants plan to earn a degree or certificate at the college. Transfer degrees (A.A. and A.S.) are designed to satisfy the first two years of the bachelor's degree at four-year colleges and universities. The A.A.S. degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates are not designed for transfer, but to prepare graduates for employment.

Non-curricular applicants have not chosen a degree program at the college or are interested in taking courses for their own interest.  Those non-curricular applicants who indicate they are enrolling at the college in order to satisfy program requirements at their home institution (college or university) will be admitted as transient students. They should submit a completed Transient Student Approval Form to Central Admissions and Records for each semester enrolled at Reynolds. This form ensures transfer of the courses to their home institution. Based on the certification of readiness by the home institution, certain placement tests and/or prerequisites may be waived.

Certain high school students may be permitted to enroll in college-level courses prior to graduating from high school. High school juniors and seniors who are approved to participate in the Dual Enrollment program may receive both high school and college credit.

Students whose primary language is not English must either complete the college's English language proficiency testing or submit required documentation for a waiver of these tests prior to registration. Non-native speakers may be restricted to English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, and will be expected to complete these before progressing to COMPASS tests and most other classes.
