2008 Urban Teachers Institute Staff, Mentors, and Participants

Welcome to the Urban Teacher Institute

This summer brought the Second Annual Urban Teachers Summer Institute.  Twenty-six Richmond, Petersburg, and Henrico County Public School Teachers came together to participate in a one week institute of professional development hosted by J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College's Center for Teacher Education, supported by Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Education and funded by The Community Foundation.  Sunday, June 22 was a Kick-Off reception that included a keynote address by Dr. Jacqueline Jordan Irvine, an authority on Urban Education.  Each day was split between a morning training session with Dr. Shirley Key, an Urban Education expert from Memphis, TN.  Each afternoon was spent in content specific training with top instructors at Virginia Commonwealth University.

During the year, the Urban Teachers Institute will offer modules available to the participants of each summer's program.  This coursework will lead to an Urban Specialist Certificate from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Council of the Great City Schools Fall Conference
Nashville, Tennessee

Dr. Morrison attended the Council of the Great City Schools Fall Conference in Nashville Tennessee to share information regarding this summer's Urban Teachers Institute and getting ideas for the Institute in the future.

Urban Teacher Institute
To help improve the current state of urban education in Richmond, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University and Richmond Public Schools, hosted a week-long Urban Teacher Institute on June 24-29.
