Mission and Vision

The mission of the Center for Teacher education is to provide meaningful early teacher preparation and meaningful professional development.

Meaningful Preparation…Meaningful Professional Development

Center for Teacher EducationThe Center for Teacher Education Vision:
The vision of The Center for Teacher Education is to positively influence PK-12 student achievement by preparing pre-service and in-service teachers as well as support staff.  The preparation of teachers is foundational to this vision.  The Center will enhance the current program at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in order to provide the best possible pre-teacher education students to our senior institutions and ultimately to the PK-12 students who the candidates will serve.  Helping to provide teachers who can positively impact student achievement in urban, rural and suburban settings is essential to the vision.

Additionally, The Center will expand the collaborative relationships with all Deans and Program Heads at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.  The Center will serve as a liaison to facilitate clear communication between the J. Sargeant Reynolds community and local districts, schools and teachers. Additionally, The Center will provide guidance to program heads in regard to intentional scheduling practices to attract educators for credit bearing courses.  The Center will be the catalyst at J. Sargeant Reynolds to develop a college-wide effort to support PK-12 education in the area.

The Center, with its partnership with the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) will become the preferred provider of meaningful professional development for local public school districts and private schools.  This will be accomplished by developing collaborative partnerships with the local school districts and schools.  By establishing a partnership based on responding to the needs of districts and schools, The Center will provide meaningful professional development that focuses on these needs.  One facet of these partnerships is the development of a professional consortium that focuses on the needs of the districts in the CCWA service area.  This model allows districts to take advantage of a wider variety of professional development opportunities than they would have had access to on their own.  A final aspect of these partnerships is that relationships with local schools will be developed which will provide field experience opportunities that are mutually beneficial for these schools and our pre-teacher education students.

Throughout all activities, the Center for Teacher Education will focus on continuous improvement.  Through careful planning, implementation and evaluation The Center will exemplify a professional and effective organization.
