Praxis & VCLA Information
New Virginia Teacher Licensure requirements no longer require Praxis I to
obtain teacher licensure. Praxis I is only required to gain admittance to
an Undergraduate level Teacher Preparation program. If you are a student
in need of this test to enter a Teacher Preparation Program at the 4-year
university level, you may visit
the
Praxis Website. For more information about registering to take the Praxis examinations and test fees, visit the Educational Testing Service website at
http://www.ets.org/praxis/va.
If you are currently pursuing Commonwealth of Virginia Teacher Licensure, the
following professional teacher's assessments are required:
Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment
"The VCLA measures the communication and literacy skills necessary to teach and
communicate effectively with parents and others in the education community. The
VCLA is composed of two subtests—a reading subtest and a writing subtest."
This is similar to the Reading and Writing portion of the Praxis I.
Go to the
VCLA Website for more
information.
Virginia Reading Assessment (if your endorsement will be in elementary,
special education or reading specialist)
"The VRA will satisfy for elementary teachers the reading component of the
teaching skills requirement mandated by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
The test will help identify those teaching candidates who have the knowledge and
skills that are important for performing the job of an elementary (preK–3 or
preK–6) teacher, a special education teacher, or a reading specialist in
Virginia public schools." Visit the
VRA Website for more information about this test.
Praxis II
"Subject Assessments measure knowledge of specific subjects that K-12 educators
will teach, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills and
knowledge. There are Subject Assessments, Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT)
Tests and Teaching Foundations Tests." For more information regarding the
Praxis II or to find out which Praxis II you need to take visit the
ETS Praxis II website and select
Virginia from the S
tate Testing Requirements list. Study guides for
the Praxis II exams are available on the website above or through online
bookstores.
