Beware of unsolicited offers. Do not "pay money to get
money"! The FinAid website will help you determine if a
scholarship offer is legitimate or a scam. www.finaid.org/scholarships/scams.phtml
Advice on finding scholarships from Tavia Evans, a 2001 graduate of Northwestern University, excerpted from an article on www.fastweb.com.
 | Do Your Homework- Take advantage of free online scholarship searches such as www.fastweb.com. Also, look up the home pages of the colleges you want to attend because they also post information on scholarships offered through the school. The reference section in the library provides books and resources of federal, national, and state resources of college aid. The library also has scholarship "directories" that list awards based on age, state or residence, cultural background or field of study. |
 | Search in Your Community- Scholarships for college can be as close as your neighborhood bank. Start by asking the organizations and institutions in your community of city if they offer awards for college. Don't forget about cultural organizations that grant awards based on ethnic background. |
 | Don't Limit Yourself- There are also scholarship for unique talents and abilities. Don't confine yourself to academic scholarships of the big national awards. Small awards will come in handy later on for things like books, toiletries and other college necessities. |

Harvard University President Lawrence H. Summers announced in February 2004 a major new initiative designed to encourage talented students from families of low and moderate income to attend Harvard College. While the new initiative has four major components, including recruitment, admissions, and a summer academic program designed to prepare talented students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds for college, the financial aid component increases aid for students from low and moderate income families. Beginning with the 2004-05 year, parents in families with incomes of less than $40,000 will no longer be expected to contribute to the cost of attending Harvard for their children. In addition, Harvard will reduce the contributions expected of families with incomes between $40,000 and $60,000. For additional information, visit http://fao.fas.harvard.edu/index.htm. |

The primary purpose of the VTSLP is to provide an incentive to students who want to teach in one of Virginia's critical shortage fields. At this time, the critical shortage fields include all areas of special education, sciences, technology education, library media, foreign languages, English as a second language, reading (reading specialist), work and family studies, and agricultural education. Males who wish to teach in the elementary or middle grades and people of color in all teaching fields are also eligible. Through the VTSLP, eligible students may receive a scholarship-loan up to $3,720. When the student completes his/her program, the scholarship-loan is totally forgiven if the student teaches for four semesters in the public schools of Virginia in the critical shortage field. Recipients may teach in any public school in Virginia. If, upon completion of the program, the student does not teach, the scholarship-loan must be paid back to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Each year students who are enrolled in one of the 37 colleges and universities in Virginia with approved teacher preparation programs are nominated by the college or university to receive the award. To qualify, students must be enrolled on a full- or part-time basis, be at or beyond the sophomore year, possess a grade point average of at least 2.7, and be identified as a domiciliary resident of Virginia. The VTSLP applications are distributed to each of the 37 colleges and universities early in the spring semester and are usually returned to the Department of Education by the end of April. Recipients are chosen by a selection panel and are notified individually of their selection. This scholarship-loan program is open to JSRCC students and is coordinated by the Virginia Department of Education. For more information, call the Virginia Department of Education automated response line at 1-800-292-3820 and leave your name and address or visit http://www-test.pen.k12.va.us/ |
