There is a buzz in the community about a collaborative, tangible solution to a specific K-12 challenge in City of Richmond Schools – retaining urban teachers and equipping them with the skills required to succeed in an urban classroom. Reynolds Receives Endowed Gift from the Robins Foundation [back to top]

The Robins Foundation has generously contributed $200,000 to establish a permanent endowment for the Middle College. This program, located on our Downtown Campus on 7th and Jackson Streets, helps 18-24 year-old high school dropouts achieve their GED and prepare for college-level courses or workforce entry. In 2008-09, the interest from the endowment will be used to provide tuition assistance for at-risk young adults and raise the standard of living potential for citizens in Richmond. The Robins Endowment will provide a permanent stream of funding to assist about 40 Middle College graduates transitioning to college each year.

Nineteen Richmond Public School Teachers came together in June 2007, to participate in a one week professional development institute hosted by J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College's Center for Teacher Education and supported by Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Education and Richmond City Public Schools.  The first Urban Teachers Institute was made possible by funding provided by The Community Foundation of Greater Richmond.  Activities included a look at the perceptions of education by students, teachers and administrators presented by performance artist Brooke Haycock of The Education Trust and the development of innovative teaching modules that the nineteen teacher participants are using in their middle school math and science classes.  A multi-discipline approach using real world examples that urban students can relate to was used in developing these teaching modules.  At the concluding breakfast, the Honorable Ann Holton, First Lady of Virginia, shared her hopes for the future of Richmond's urban students and commended the Institute as an important step toward improving the urban education setting.

Reynolds celebrates Week of the Nurse May 6-12 with gift to address nursing faculty shortage [back to top]

Deborah Johnston, CEO of Care Advantage believes strongly in the business of caring. In fact, this concern follows the lead of her company motto, “Our Advantage Is Caring,” and is a cornerstone of her success since 1998 when she began the home healthcare company.

A generous gift from Johnston will establish the Deborah J. Johnston Chair of Nursing at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College to help recruit much needed nursing faculty to teach future generations of nurses.

The nursing shortage is a comprehensive issue which includes the challenge in colleges operating costly nursing programs for students, and recruiting top nursing faculty to teach future nurses. The General Assembly has taken action to increase nursing faculty salaries at public institutions in Virginia by 10%. But this is not enough. Community colleges must get creative in addressing the nursing shortage issue through public and private partnerships to ensure quality healthcare providers are being trained and available for future care.

Georgiadis Hall dedicated on Parham Road Campus [back to top]

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College recently recognized the commitment and generosity of Dimitri and Maggie Georgiadis through the naming of “Georgiadis Hall” on the Parham Road Campus.

After teaching for free for over 13 years, Dimitri Georgiadis recently pledged more than $1 million to the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Educational Foundation to fund scholarships for at-risk youth in the Richmond area.

After leading several international companies, including Shering-Plough Corporation and Productos Del Monte, a former subsidiary of R.J. Reynolds Industries based in Mexico City, Georgiadis settled in Richmond, Virginia in 1994. His passion for photography soon lead him to take a class at Reynolds. He never left. In addition to donating equipment to the program and establishing the Maggie & Dimitri Georgiadis Scholarship, he has shared his knowledge of photography with students as a pro-bono faculty member and as program head for more than 13 years.

Born in Greece, Georgiadis came to America in 1947 in search of the American dream. He soon discovered that for him the dream would begin with a college education. He attended New York University where he earned a B.S. in International Trade in 1951—the same year he became a U.S. citizen. From there, he studied at the graduate level at the University of Illinois while serving in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his career in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.

Reynolds Foundation donates $1M to remove financial barriers for J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College students [back to top]

As students headed back to campus at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College this fall the college celebrated a historic event by receiving one of its largest gifts ever donated by a private family foundation. The JSRCC Educational Foundation announced recently that a $1 million gift from the Richard S. Reynolds Foundation has been made to increase much needed scholarship funds for future generations of Reynolds students.

Known as the “Reynolds Family Scholarships in Memory of J. Sargeant Reynolds,” the family makes this generous gift in celebration of the qualities embodied in the late J. Sargeant Reynolds, for whom the college is named. By commemorating his outstanding character and unwavering integrity through a gift that fosters this potential in today’s young people the family foundation establishes a permanent scholarship fund.

Increasing tuition remains a financial barrier for students pursuing a college education and currently more than $238,000 in scholarship awards are made annually to applicants. Nearly 900 qualified students are not assisted, however, due to limited funds. For more information about how you can be involved in the Scholarship Program contact 523-5181.
