Performing Arts Club presents Lyric 101

The JSRCC Performing Arts Club is hosting an open mic night event called “Lyric 101.” All emcee’s singers, poets and artists are invited to participate in the Downtown Campus Auditorium from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on February 24, March 24 and April 21. VCU to offer “on the spot” admissions

Virginia Commonwealth University Transfer Coordinator Artis Gordon will offer “on the spot” transfer admission on March 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Downtown Campus in room 474 and on March 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Georgiadis Hall, room 201 on the Parham Road Campus. Hoop it up for Hunger – March 18

The Office of Student Life is coordinating a three-on-three basketball tournament to collect food for the hungry. “Hoop it up for Hunger” is scheduled on March 16 at 11 a.m. on the recreation fields on the Parham Road Campus. Register your team by March 10 by calling 804.523.5083 or 804.523.5082 or stop by any Student Life office. Players and spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations. At least one player on each team must be a JSRCC student, staff or faculty member.


Cultural Cinema Series presents "The Kite Runner" – March 25

The JSRCC Multicultural Enrichment Council (MEC) and the Office of Student Life will present “The Kite Runner” on March 25 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Downtown Campus Auditorium and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lipman Auditorium on the Parham Road Campus. Connecting women’s past, present and future – March 26

In honor of Women’s History Month, the JSRCC Multicultural Enrichment Council is sponsoring the luncheon “Empowerment:  Connecting the Past, Present and Future” on March 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gallery of Georgiadis Hall on the Parham Road Campus. Speakers include Maricel Quintana-Baker, president and founder of the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network, Manju Garneriwala, treasurer of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Judge Cleo Powell of the Virginia Court of Appeals. The day will end with a Salute to Women in Jazz featuring Marie Goodman-Hunter, Desiree Roots Centeio and Debo Dabney Trio.

Sign Language Club sponsors food drive

Join the JSRCC American Sign Language Club in helping Richmond put “hand to mouth" by participating in a canned food drive through March 31. All donations benefit Central Virginia Foodbank. Donation boxes are located in the halls outside of the following locations: Downtown Campus American Sign Language Lab (Room 211); Downtown Campus Computer Lab (Room 462); Parham Road Campus, Massey LTC Library and the Parham Road Campus Burnette Hall Commons/Cafeteria.


Compete with College faculty in the JSRCC Academic Bowl

The Office of Student Life will host the College’s inaugural JSRCC Academic Bowl on April 1 at 6 p.m. in the Lipman Auditorium on the Parham Road Campus – where students will compete against faculty and staff in a tournament featuring a variety of questions on history, science, geography, sports and more. Reynolds to host annual Science Night – April 7

The JSRCC School of Mathematics and Science will host the sixth annual Science Night on April 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Gallery of Georgiadis Hall on the Parham Road Campus. Topics presented by Reynolds science faculty will include “Myth Busting Relativity,” “Columbian Mammoths at Hot Springs, South Dakota,” and “Emerging Diseases.” Light refreshments will be served.


Go “Around the World Through Books” – April 8

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College will host a culturally enriching book discussion on Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life on April 8 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the College’s Western Campus, 1851 Dickinson Road, Goochland, Va. JSRCC Instructor Cindy Conner will join JSRCC Sustainable Agricultural Club students at Western Campus in leading the discussion and providing tours of the College’s sustainable gardens. Garden tours will begin at 6 p.m. and the book discussion will immediately follow. The book is about a year eating homegrown food and gardening in southern Appalachia. The Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardeners in conjunction with JSRCC and the Virginia Cooperative Extension will offer a spring garden festival on April 24 from

Are you eligible for a $2,000 scholarship?

The Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) Scholarship is accepting applications through April 5. Students may be eligible to receive a $2,000 scholarship for the 2010-2011 year. To learn more, attend an information session on March 16 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. or March 17 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Massey Library Technology Center, room 225, on the Parham Road Campus. International cookbook proceeds to help Hatian students

The Reynolds ESL program is selling international cookbooks containing recipes contributed by ESL students and JSRCC faculty and staff. JSRCC is currently home to six Haitian students, most of whom still have family in Haiti. Cookbook proceeds will help defray the cost of their tuition or textbooks. Cookbooks are $10. Get your artwork on the cover of Inquiry

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges invites community college students to submit their best artwork for possible publication on the front cover of the journal. Works may be photographs, drawings, paintings, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and digital images. The winner will receive a $250 cash prize and several copies of the journal. Artwork must be original, previously unpublished, and created by a student enrolled in a Virginia community college. Up to three images may be submitted for consideration and should be submitted in digital form by email attachment by May 15, 2010. Get your student ID card and parking decal

JSRCC Police and Security offers student ID’s and parking decals at each campus. For the first two weeks of the spring semester (January 11 through January 22) officers will be available to provide ID's at each campus location between the hours of 9 a.m. and
7 p.m. Regular hours will return on January 18.

Regular open hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to noon or
6 p.m. to 7 p.m. ID and decal rooms are located at the Downtown Campus in room 166C, at the Parham Road Campus in Burnette Hall, room 130 and at the Western Campus Police and Security ID Room in Building C-20.

As a convenience, an ID machine is available at the Police and Security Services headquarters (Parham Road Campus). This will be available during normal college hours of operation (7a.m. to 10 p.m.).

For ID cards, students are required to present a current copy of their class schedule and a valid state driver’s license or identification card. For parking decals, students must present a current copy of their class schedule, a current copy of their vehicle registration and a valid state driver’s license or identification card.



Parking at the Downtown Campus


The entrance/exit to the Downtown Campus parking deck is located on N 8th Street. Students with activated ID cards can use the Downtown Campus parking deck. All students enrolled in classes are required to use their JSRCC issued ID. Those without an activated student ID, can obtain parking validation at the JSRCC Police and Securities Office, Room 122. Online students, distance learning students, visitors, future students, disabled students and students visiting from the Parham Road or Western Campuses are eligible to receive parking validation. Students eligible for validation will need to present a current copy of their class schedule and a Student ID or valid driver’s license.



Overflow parking at the Downtown Campus

During peak times, the main parking deck may become full. Students, staff and faculty may use auxiliary parking lots A and B located on 7th Street just past the Interstate-95 overpass.  Shuttle service will be provided approximately every 10 to 20 minutes from overflow lots, as well as the staff and faculty lot in the new deck on Navy Hill Drive, to the Downtown Campus between 7:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Reynolds Police & Security will monitor overflow and staff/faculty parking lots to ensure safety and use by JSRCC students, faculty and staff only. Unauthorized vehicles will be ticketed and towed. For more information, or if you experience problems with your ID card, please contact Parking Manager, Deborah Shipe at 804.523.5471.

Overflow parking on the Parham Road Campus

Overflow parking at the Parham Road Campus is available near the recreation fields located behind the College facilities building. A special shuttle service will be provided between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. between the recreation field lots and parking lot K (near the College bookstore).

Learn more about Virginia’s Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) - a program designed to help both employers and career seekers certify that a job applicant has the basic math, reading and information-gathering skills required to be successful in most jobs.
The Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA), a regional partnership combining the workforce development efforts of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and John Tyler Community College, is the point of contact for the Career Readiness Certificate program at J. Sargeant Reynolds.
